Sprite Controls

September 11, 2011 | 02:20 PM

Not really for the casual user, but these tools can allow for site performance increases and easier redesigns.

Essentially, a Sprite is a portion of a larger image. Since the large image loads only once, all Sprites built from the large image load very quickly.

imageThe example image to the right is a sprite image used for the "About Us" menu items on our corporate site. In this entry we have included two sprites from the larger image. Although not required, sprite images often contain "hover" counterparts.

The sprite uses the "fixed width" and "fixed height" controls to define the dimensions of the image, then the image "offset" (top and left) controls to define the upper left corner of the image within the large image. Since the system only loads the image once, the use of sprites makes your site faster.

Sprites can be applied almost anywhere within your Linear system where icons are an option - client legends, menus and more.

Want to change your icons? Simply replace all the images in the large image and the individual sprites will still draw from their quadrant of the large image.
