Leawood Lions honor members

The Leawood Lions gave the President Award to Don Schultz during the Lions' annual awards celebration and installation of officers July 17.

"This is the first President Award in several years," past President Gary Flick said.

Schultz led the Salvation Army bell ringing fundraiser and other events, including the Labor Day Pancake Days in Leawood.

"The Salvation Army bell ringing brings in about $30,000," Flick said. "The award is for outstanding work in the club and leading projects."

Earl Marian received the Lion of the Year Award for his work collecting donations for various events, including the Pancake Days silent auction.

Leroy Kashka and Mike Klein received the Melvin Jones Award, the highest honor awarded to an individual by the Lions Club International Foundation. Melvin Jones founded Lions International.

The Leawood Lions also installed Tom Willy as club president at the event.

Financial Times ranks Lions Club International Foundation as the best nongovernmental organization worldwide.

Flick said 100 percent of the money collected by the Lions goes to charities.

"There are no administrative costs and no expenses," he said. "We have given grants to Greensburg and Osawatomie for their tragedies."

Flick said Lions also help people get eye exams and glasses, buy CTV readers for the library and make donations to diabetes charities.

While the capabilities of the system are impressive, what I have found most useful is Linear's willingness to implement new features and its ability to support the ones it has. The Linear system has so many features, that one newspaper will never use them all. I have looked at other newspaper content management systems, but have yet to find one that matches Linear's price, tech support and feature set."
