Call Elements

Our most demanding clients use the page layout feature (see Custom Page Layouts) constantly - they know what they want and they get it.

The page layout feature allows you to place elements anywhere on the page. Call Elements become availablke to page layouts. Also noteworthy is that Call Elements can be drawn into inclusions.

Essentially, Call Elements dynamically retrieve other information from your Linear system. The information is retrieved in bits where each bit can be stylized and linked.

So, you might create a Call Element retrieving the 4 most recent comments. From each of the comments you pull bits of information:
  • Title, define its text properties and link it to the commented item.
  • Entry Date, define it's text properties
  • Entry Time, define it's text properties
  • Member image (if applicable), define size, alignment, border, shadows
  • Comment Body, define it's text properties, get the first 150 characters
This pulled the 4 most recent comments. Other delimiters might include a particular category and more. Best of all, the Call Element is entirely dynamic. When a new comment is added (and approved) it appears atop the list.

Other notable data bits which can be pulled into a Call Element (where applicable) include:
  • Author
  • Author picture
  • Member name
  • Member picture
  • Rating
  • Comments
  • Sections and categories
  • Entry Date
  • Entry Time
  • Modification Date
  • Modification Time
  • Players (podcast and video)
From which portions of the Linear system can Call Elements be created? We really handcuffed you here, the following systems are available to Call Elements:Call Elements are entirely CSS compatible allowing you to control the appearance of the entire Element, each Item within the Elements and each Bit within the Items.

Duplication: Call Elements also offer some unique management porperties. You can duplicate a Call Element. Why, well creat a Call Elements pulling the 5 top news stories, then duplicate it to change to the Sports section.

Templates: More powerful yet is the ability to use an existing Call Element as a template for other Call Elements. So you create a Call Element pulling the top 3 News items, then use it as the template when creating Call Elements for Sports, Business and Entertainment. Later you decide to include the author's name linking to the author's search results - just change the Call Element for the News and all other Call Elements using that temlate will change simutaneously.

Other Exotic Controls: Call Elements can be presented in multiple columns. They can "Skip" a certain number of items before retrieving data. they can reteive data based on "Site Tags".

times newspapersWhen we realized we needed to upgrade our Web site, we knew we could not do it alone. Linear Publishing more than answered the call. All the new features we were looking for were already in place at Linear. In addition, if we came up with a feature not yet available, they created it.

We now publish two Web sites a week in less time than it took us to publish one. The free time has opened me up to explore new ideas and features to use on our site. It's a great feeling when you can get an idea and in no time have it up and running online. Thanks to it's ease of use, our Web site is getting better and better every day.

We are always getting compliments from our readers and advertisers. With help from Linear Publishing, we are becoming the e-voice of the community that we were striving for.
